Can I freeze meat again after it's thawed?
If your meat is fully defrosted, please do not refreeze it. This is a food safety issue. We want you and yours to live long and healthy lives!
That said, here are some guidelines from the USDA:
- Meat that remains below 40°F can safely be put back in the freezer. This means that if you put a pack of chicken thighs into the refrigerator, and only need some of them for dinner, you can separate those items you need and put the rest back into the freezer without any risk.
- Meat can be frozen again after it has been cooked. Be sure to cook it through to the recommended internal temperature, then let it cool, and freeze it.
- Meat can be partially thawed to portion out. For more information on doing this, please see our FAQ here.
So if your meat remained at or below refrigerator temperature (40°F), you can safely put it back into your freezer.
